Martin Ward - Composer 'Andersen Ballets'

Martin Ward was born in Cambridge in 1970. He started his musical life playing the trumpet and piano, before studying composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Buxton Orr and Robert Saxton, also studying orchestration with Francis Shaw and electronic music with Javier Alvarez.  He gained his GGSM graduate qualification with a 2:1. After college he worked in the music departments of both the Royal Opera House and the BBC, gaining experience on all practical levels of the music business. During this time Martin continued to compose, reaching the final of the IBM International Composition Prize with the film ‘Offending Angels’ in 2000. Other Television and film credits include: War Stories (Discovery Channel 2002), The Show (The Lab 1999) and Stand Up Britain (Granada 2002)

In 2002 Martin was commissioned to compose his first ballet ‘Wind In The Willows’ for the Royal Opera House.  The ballet premiered at the ROH on December 10th to great critical and public acclaim.  The show returned for a month long run at the Opera House in December 2003, and there are now plans for a tour in the UK and internationally.

Martin followed up this success with another ‘Purple Rage Dream Scope’, a concert work for fifteen-piece ensemble, an electro-acoustic commission ‘Turning Points’ for the Trumpet virtuoso Pasi Pirinen.

Martin’s most recent works have been for the English National Ballet who commissioned him for their major production Oscar Wilde’s ‘Canterville Ghost’.  He is also working on a narrative work for Orchestra and Narrator ‘Ancestry of the Wolf’.
